Unbelievably we had Elbow completely to ourselves on a weekend. One of our cameras went on an adventure of its own and found its way into the moat by the large rock at the bottom of the approach snow field. We hiked up the gully (too far?) until we were below a large chockstone and gained the arete from there. We passed a piton on pitch 2, then we probably got off route. None of the terrain inspired any simu-climbing. Wanting to stay in approach shoes we stayed to the right of the arete and off of the crest most of the time, possibly traversing the N.face. We encountered quite a bit of moss, mud, loose rock, and snowy ledges. When we finally topped out we were at the west side of the large ledge that the summit block sits on. We ended up doing 6.5 60m pitches with only a few challenging moves: the start, a nice hand crack, a few mossy mantles, and one great move to gain the summit ledge. Wet and wierd, but most of the rock was great! The most fun I've had leading with a pack on! Also there was no pencil in the registers at the top.

Great day with five other type 1 diabetics on the summit of Cowen. Four of us did the NE arete and two others the SW face.

Very pleasant climbing in a spectacular setting. 5.6 for the NE Arete? Don't think so, but it is a serious route regardless.
