yayoubetchaEast Face is easy, but...  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Apr 12, 2009
I live in the yuppie-ghetto called the Anasazi Plateau. My home has a fantastic view of Mount Kinesava. I have been up this a few times. The best way to approach is go up to the Anasazi Plateau right off of HWY-9 between Rockville and the "Springdale Market". Drive on Anasazi Way and ignore the signs that say "No Parking beyond this point". Seriously, I live here, and you actually have the right to go beyond. Park next to a pull-out right before the first bridge.

After parking head up the obvious dirt road that steeply climbs up to the community's water tower. There is a climbers trail that follows the ridge up to the upper plateau. It is a little more than an hour from the parking. From there the standard description is pretty correct. No ropes or pro is needed. If you are by yourself, just bring water. If you have two or more in your group, bring water and your helmets!!! The steep approach up the gully will rain down small and big rocks; put 20 meters between each group member. Once you head up the ramp, stay to the right (near the edge), it is a very easy go with fairly easy class-3 climbing. If you "hug" the wall, you have more 4th class stuff. I've done it, but the big thrill for me on this climb, is the wonderful upper-plateau above the ramp.

Parking to tree line: 1.25 hours
Tree line to start of ramp: 1.5 hours
Ramp to top plateau: .75 hours
Top Plateau to Kinesava Summit: .5 hours

Total RT moving time is about 7 to 8 hours, but add a few more for exploring. The upper plateau, where you see the base of the 300 foot Mt. Kinesava summit-block is worth exploring. You cannot miss the very easy to find petroglyph images. The summit view from Kinesava is one of my all-time views.

This is a fun climb I have done a few times. For me, it has been a thrill to complete the climb, and then sit on the back-deck of my house and enjoy a cold beer while looking back at the climbing route.

Final Important note: Cowboy Ridge is closed by the park in the Spring and Fall for the falcons. Check with the Park if you are going up the Cowboy Ridge route. The East-Face is exempt.
