| 5 hours round trip from Dinkey Lakes trailhead. Direct north face is a class 2 scramble. Wonderful mountain vistas on a sublime Fall morning. | |

| With my wife and new baby off to Oklahoma for the weekend, I had to take advantage of the perfect opportunity for an all day outing with the dogs. I had hoped there would be snow in the shady spots for the dogs and there was just enough to make them happy while still leaving me with the option to avoid it. I got a late start, hitting the road in Gilroy at 9:30 a.m. and making it back home around 1:00 a.m. I followed the CLiff Lake trail most of the way up. The views up on top were so amazing on a clear day that I stuck around almost until sunset. The combination of location and clear skies (no haze) made this the most expansive view of impressive Sierra Peaks I have ever seen! It was a bit chilly (31 degrees back at the car at 8,200 feet around 8:30 p.m.), but luckily not very windy. I relied on the moon and the nose of my yellow lab to scramble off trail most of the way back through the forest in the dark. I could have done the trip much faster with more daylight and more urgency on my part, but sometimes the things we slow down for make life more interesting. | |

| Well said, Matthew! See, unlike you, my "work" involves taking showers in the N Fork of the Kings, organizing gear for the next climb, and thinking up how I'm going to score dinner for the night. I squeezed this in as a morning run, getting back for a full "rest" day, tricking my body into lounging for the duration of sunlight. Nice, easy hike, with good views on a clear day. The walls above Cliff Lake make for some great scrambling/climbing! The next day was a Tehipite Dome/Spanish Mtn dayhike. | |

| I got up really early on a Friday, went into work long before sunrise, and managed to squeeze in a full day's work before noon... so that I could then drive a few hours to the Sierra, and tag this one in the afternoon without having to take a day off work. I felt like a junkie who'd figured out how to get his fix without anyone noticing. Excellent summit views from an otherwise dull peak--all the way from the Clark Range to Goddard, and probably further south too. | |
