Date Climbed: Oct 12, 2009

Very scenic on the drive to and from and on the summit. Deer everywhere, fortunately no hunters or the chords of duelling banjos up there. Saw one other vehicle on the way back to Richfield. Also hit up White Pine Peak as well.

Thunder near but not overhead so we went for it. Another COHP for the kids. Drove up ATV road but out other way to do White Pine Peak, Sunset Peak, Hans Ridge, Peak 9500, Willow Creek Peak, Jacks Peak, Pioneer Peak, Peak 9934, Peak 10,042 and Coffee Peak. After a day and a half doing this, the kids got tired of peakbagging and wanted McDonalds. Map and pics at http://www.willhiteweb.com/index_227.htm

Camped at the cattle guard. Woke up early and were at the peak just after first light. Drove over to Delano and hiked it after.

Brent & I began the hike using the High in Utah directions for the 12-mile r/t jaunt. Many stream crossings, lots of horse tracks and other miscellaneous horse-related ground cover, crusty snow, faint trails and ever-changing terrain make this county high point hike worthwhile. Temperature never went above 38 degrees during our 7-hour trip. Saw no wildlife except for a hawk which was lazily soaring east of the summit.

We used the SP directions which were great. We found them to be off by a tenth or two here and there, but nothing that provided any confusion. We had to ask permission to park by the cattle guard since a band of bow hunters had "squatted" the land. We received some really odd looks and there was some serious head-shaking going on as we pulled in, put on our boots, hiked Mine Camp and returned within 30 minutes.

rharrisLong drive, short hike  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 2, 2008

We drove up from Richfield, using the directions and mileposts from the SP site. The road was a good road up from Richfield, not really any problem spots. For some reason, the mileposts were a bit too short (maybe a problem with my odometer), it was a full 18.0 miles (rather than 17.5) from the I-70 underpass on 300 North in Richfield to the cattle guard where the hike begins. There was some kind of ATV rendezvous going on up on top, we must have seen over 100 ATVs, and we had to pull over to let a lot of them pass, making the going kinda slow. From the cattle guard at mile 18, it's a relatively easy stroll down a saddle and back up through an aspen grove to the open area on top. Walk time from cattle guard to summit is about 20 minutes, give or take. There are 2 cairns up there, right next to each other on the summit, and a trail register that doesn't get much use, as the only people who seem to visit this peak are county highpointers. We decided to drive down the Fillmore side rather than return the way we came, and that road is much much worse. It is steep and extremely rocky, with a lot of loose and pointy rocks, and the going was very very slow, no more than 5-10 mph most of the way down. It is doable in a good 4WD vehicle with some guts and high clearance; if you don't have a vehicle like this don't attempt the Fillmore road.

TracyEarly morning hike under a harvest moon  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Oct 26, 2007

Drove up from the Fillmore side and drove down the Richfield side all before the sun rose. There were some good-sized patches of snow that already had tracks running through them. I hiked to the summit from the cattleguard on the road (down and up - took me 20 minutes one way) under the light of a very bright moon more than an hour before sunrise. This is my 12th Utah County highpoint. Thanks for the good info, Dean!

Wow! If you want a steep ascent go from the Fillmore side, but be careful you are going to need fairly high clearance and definitely four wheel drive and a car with guts because this route is relentlessly steep. It was 101 degrees in the valley the day I did it and man I was just praying my car wouldn't overheat. Better view from this side as well.

Drove in from Richfield, road is long and bumpy. Summited and descended in 40 minutes. Took the Fillmore road down, and I would say it was a scary experience, if you like rough steep jeep trails than you might like it. Views down towards Fillmore are awesome, you can even see Notch Peak very well on clear days.

This was part of a long day trip that netted 7 UT county highpoints. I believe a slept most of the way in as my wife drove the dirt road, and she slept on the way out as we headed south.

Not interested in a long hike, so I drove the ATV road to the saddle and made a short hike from there. A fire was nearby.

Embarassingly, I got pretty sick on the decent. Super strange. I saw a large herd of deer near the summit, and a freshly killed/eaten cow on the hillside below the ridge road. I took the HIU route in Bear Canyon, BTW. Saw no cougars nor bears.
