Hoping the "third time's a charm" adage will allow me to tag this beast. First denied 11/1/08 as I hit 'turnaround time' on the Sam Fink. This was my second attempt and I was denied by class 5 just SW of the summit as a result of taking the wrong "loose, steep gully."

I'm not too proud to admit it. My route-finding skills in following HPS routes are a bit suspect. Took a 'loose, steep' gully that's marked with a large duck (actually a rock on a downed tree) - loose, steep and dangerous in places it was! Made it to the large saddle (~7450') between the two main rocky prominences and then followed a few ducks up a fancy class 3 (low 4 moves by choice) ledge system heading up to the large NE-SW summit ridge. This lead me to a window just SW of the summit proper with a nice class 5 80 ft wall to the summit. BTW - this isn't the HPS route!! Tried to find ways over the rib blocking a northeasterly traverse, but it was all spooky 4/5. Looking back at the TRs and topos, I took the wrong gully. Should have noted my mistake when I didn't find the "15 yard, brushed out traverse." Fun rock on this SE rib, but without the summit reward unless soloing class 5 is your ticket.

There are a few gullies as you pass Antsell on the the PCT. If coming from the SE resist the urge until you reach the third one. The first is rather discrete. The second has signs of activity (including mine), but there are places where you have to use tree branches, roots and blocks just for traction. Bob Burd describes the HPS chute (third one - I'm guessing) as "Though steep and loose, it was very straightforward and posed little danger..." Definitely unlike the one I took!!

Challenging sucker to say the least!

Date Climbed: Dec 3, 2008

This fifth peak ruined our plans. Missed the Sam Fink trail from the north, climbed a loose and sometimes exciting gully on the east before meeting the Sam Fink ducked trail again. Didn't know what to do at the face so started following the ducked gully route down (which is the Topo marked but not described HPS route) until Bob decided to force his way up a very brushy Class 3 route that topped out just below the summit. Descended the described HPS Route #2 for some loose Class 3. With (a frustrated) Bob Burd.

Dave DalyBack Again....  Sucess!
Date Climbed: May 19, 2007

Tagging this one again in an effort to do a circuit along the Desert Divide. Found the summit register at the BOTTOM of the 3rd class chimney, 100 feet below the summit. Of course, its signed by people who didn't go to the summit either....total BS! Anyway, being the good samaritan that I am, I naturally took it back up to it's rightful spot on the summit. Talked to Deb on the cell while on the summit as she was preparing to climb Bloody Couloir. Off to Apache...

Somehow I don't think too many people do this in Jan. Fun scramble but what it took to get there and back was a chore. Thanks to my handsome husband's route finding skills and our joint hunger for danger, we made the summit on a beautiful afternoon.

Dave DalyWinter Ascent Via The Sam Fink  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jan 14, 2007

For all others making their way to the summit of Antsell Rock , the Sam Fink Trail is not truly a trail but a 3rd class scramble throughout all parts of the approach to the summit. Although the beginning section is ducked well, the later half offers some challenging route finding. Helpful indications were the occasional sawed tree branch and the single metal marker stamped "Sam Fink Trail". Again, do not expect this to be a trail of any sort but a solid scramble most of the way. Deb and I had a fun but challenging day starting at the Fobes TH, passing Spitler and Apache along the way. Conditions: about a foot of snow and loads of iced up rock, making the 3rd class crack to the final approach gully a bit spicy! We found that there isn't a register on top. Oh, well.

BlairNE Face-Sam Fink Trail  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Dec 23, 2006

12-23-06 - Please listen! The NE side of this rock has some screwed up options in winter, as it is ice up. And theres lots of technical rock. Deb and I had a hell of a time negotiating a way up the false summit. My great idea....sheesh.

UPDATED 8-31-07 I finally came back to tag this one with G3. We went up the Sam Fink Trail, more of a route. No Trail Here! Great Fun climbing the summit chute(s).
