When I used to work at Vitesse Semiconductor (in Camarillo, CA), I would stop by here after work and run up Mugu Peak from the parking lot across the Navy firing range. Best time up: 20 min.
I hiked up into the La Jolla valley and bushwhacked my way to La Jolla Peak. On the way back I headed up Mugu Peak before hiking back down to sea level.
An early morning summit push put me on the summit just as the sun was rising. Fog however obscured the sunrise, but the joy of a successful summmit brough forth in me an inner glow just as bright as the sun.
The office sent a party of seven to attack the peak from the west side. Due to medical difficulties only five of us summited. Conditions were fine, if a little windy from the Santa Ana's up top.
I climbed the peak this morning in 34 minutes. Yesterday I did the climb in 33. Overcast conditions, little wind. On the way back down after summiting I climbed the hill just north of Mugu Peak. A short climb that provided good views of Mugu.
Did this one when I must've been 8 or 9. Been up there numerous times. Recent routes have been up Ray Miller, along ridge, drop into La Jolla Valley, connect to Chumash Trail, and up to the top with the flag.
I live close by so I go here quite often as it's probably one of the closet hikes to home. If it's a clear day you can see the Channel Islands and some nice meadows to the east. Overall this is a short fun hike to do if you're driving along PCH. The way I usually go up is from across from the Sea bee shoting range.
