Nothing like climbing something like a real mountain that isn't officially a mountain. Great hike, true summit sure seemed like it had enough prominence to be a summit. A bear had taken a dump nearby so it stunk really bad. Pics and map at http://www.willhiteweb.com/index_333.htm

Scott WesemannWhiteout on Little Black  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Feb 14, 2009

With Matthew Van Horn on a snowy day. It was snowing on us from the trailhead to the base of Avenues Twin Peaks and then once on the summit of the west twin it cleared up and we were stoked to hit Little Black Mountain. About 20 minutes from the top of Little Black the storm became heinous, but we were so close and didn't want to turn back. The descent was hell but it was a great day.

With Scott Wesemann. We hiked to top of Avenues Twins Peaks, then hiked up to Little Black Mountain through steep, deep snow. With very limited visibility it is very easy to get lost. But we didn't.

My favorite trip was in November 2007, went up Killian's to Lookout, traversed the ridge to Little Black, descending Dry Fork and then calling My Wife to pick be up at the JCC.

tmtn93Really good Hike  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Nov 15, 2008

Hiked up to the false summit in 2 hour 30 minutes. Hiked back down in 2 hour 15 minutes. This hike was fairly long and it had very irritating "bumps". When you gained a lot of elevation, you'd lose it very quickly. There were some sidetracks that were quite helpful, but not all the bumps had sidetracks. This hike was nice and had outstanding views in all 4 directions. Near the top, there was some snow and a lot of mud.

Hiked up to LBM false summit again on May 9th, 2009. About same time round trip and same conditions.

seanpeckhama gem of a hike  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Apr 21, 2008

I often ride the Bonneville trail for exercise and have always been intrigued by Little Black. A dust storm having destroyed my motivation for skiing, but then clearing up somewhat in the afternoon, I rode (and sometimes pushed) my bike as far as was reasonable then ditched it, changed shoes, and hiked/postholed/scrambled/bushwhacked to the top. The ridge cornices were small and not overhanging but beautiful. It was a windy day but once the dust settled, the evening was gorgeous and I wished I had my camera. A bike is a good way to approach this, it made my round-trip from Terrace Hills only 5 hours and easier to stay high until sunset.

Matthew Van HornRe: Memorial Day Solo

Yeah, I was aware of the status of the Canyon when I went into it. When I finally reached the road in Red Butte, I had to walk several more miles to the gate, which Ithen had to jump. I felt like an outlaw, and became a little tense when a service truck drove by. Nobody gave me any guff, however. Beautiful canyon, nearly pristine.

Asher, If you didn't know, the reason the jeep road was so overgrown is that the canyon is closed to the public as a biology study area (or something like that). It's kind of funny that you went through there anyways. :-)

Fun winter climb, the traverse along the ridge line before the true summit was challenging given the conditions.

Several times, including once with my father, and a few times alone via bus and before I was old enough to drive.

Matthew Van HornMemorial Day Solo  Sucess!
Date Climbed: May 29, 2006

Little Black Mountain always seemed mysterious to me since it caught my attention several years ago. On memorial day I finally got up there. When I was on the highest point, two mountain joggers passed me, went on, and disappeared. A great hike I would like to do every year. From the ridge east of the summit, I decsended into a fork of Red Butte and walked MANY MILES out through Red Butte via an overgrown jeep trail. Not a soul around until I got to the bottom of Red Butte.

mountaingazelleWest Ridge  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Dec 26, 2004

My first climb up Little Black Mountain was in winter. I went up the west ridge and turned around. I later returned in the summer and did the whole traverse of the mountain. I had one of my friends drop us off at the Lookout Peak trailhead while I left my car at the Avenues. The ridge is a lot longer than it looks. Little Black Mountain is a great peak to climb in any season.

Climbed to false peak several times, but made first trip to the true summit this year. A nice peak worthy of more attention. I find it considerably more enjoyable than other more popular 8,000'ers like Grandeur and Aire.
