Long 14.5h dayhike from Cottonwood Pass TH via Lower Soldier Lake. Beautiful area but way too much sand to wade through. In the Rock Creek drainage the mosquitos were ferocious. Traverse to Joe Devel Peak was a fun class 3 scramble.

Great trip. There's something very cool about striding up the southeast "runway" to the top. Lower Rock Creek Lake is a gorgeous place to camp, has its own bear box and allows campfires. Doing Pickering from there, you're actually better off doing Joe Devel as well in a loop, then plunge step in the scree a good deal of the way back to camp.

mjrangelA very rewarding climb  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Aug 7, 2007

Solo from Primrose lake. I discovered Primrose lake after spending nearly a week exploring the Miter Basin. This lake is a Jewel of the Sierra! I bivied at the lake the night before after reaching it by headlamp from base camp along New Army Creek. I climbed strait up the headwall to the left of the unnamed peak face at the head of the hanging valley. Class 3-4. Much more interesting than the scree route to the west. I was abliged to put up an ammo box and log book for future visitors to sign. Any previous registers were no longer present. There is a nice shelter on the summit worthy of spending some time in. I followed the saddle Southeast to the unofficially named peak directly above Primrose Lake, which turned out to be a much more rewarding climb. Only five previous entries in the register which was placed there in '93. I was shocked to see Mr. Coyote up there! Can't imagine what he was looking for.

Matthew HollimanJoe Devel-Pickering-Newcomb traverse  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Sep 4, 2004

Boy, this was a pretty tough dayhike! Just did a short (5 hr) hike up Agassiz the day before to acclimatize, which probably wasn't enough--I was really feeling the altitude up on the ridge. The ambitious plans to tag Chamberlin as well fell apart, and I bailed out via Sky Blue Lake (beautiful, but many people on a Labour Day weekend). Perfect weather. No register at the time.

Of the three peaks, Newcomb was by far the best. The traverse between Pickering and Newcomb is quite enjoyable, and somewhat reminiscent of Russell's East Ridge.

Drove down to San Bernardino to do the Nine Peaks dayhike the next day. Tiring, enjoyable couple of days.
