With Fred. We went up the West Flank and descended the East Ridge/Flank scree route. 2500 feet down in less than 1 hour! This traverse of the mountain is the best way to go. Beautiful views. 7 hours car to car.

Descent via the East Ridge and scree slopes - highly recommended descent route - very fast and easy.

Date Climbed: Jul 24, 2008

Very, very rewarding hike...we went about two weeks after saintgrizzly and the last of the snow had melted off the mountain top so it was done easily in about 3 hours from Headquarters Pass, and down in about 1 1/2 hours...amazing view

Nice outing with the GMS (Glacier Mountaineering Society). From about the 7,000 foot level, the ascent was up snow fields--tiring, but certainly preferable to the occasional runs of scree which had to be overcome! Leisurely pace had us on top in four hours; the snow fields had us down in 2! Very, very nice day!

Was working for USGS up the Briggs creek drainage and had to get to the other side of Headquarters pass for the pick up. Instead of hiking the 17 miles around I opted to go over the mountain via the South West Ridge from Miners creek. Spectacular views, great climb.

GrampahawkMy first mountain outside of the Whites  Sucess!

I'm not exacly sure of the year, but I was out in Helena on a business trip and decided I'd stay a few extra days and check out the local scenery. It was the middle of July and, having only experienced the White Mountains of NH, I was quite surprised by how dry it was (no humidity), no bugs, and the sun being out at 10PM. Awesome! I just brought my stuff into the woods and camped.

I climbed this with my family a long time ago(can't remeber the exact date). I found a bunch of fossilized sea shells on the way up the side of Rocky, support for the Biblical Flood perhaps?

I originally planned to summit the following morning and just do some scouting this afternoon, but the weather was so nice that I just grabbed some extra snacks and went up. Aside from my wife and son who accompanied me halfway up along the maintained trail, no one else was out here.
