| We drove out the Old Sheffield Road to Big Spencer Flat and headed off down a wash that became Big Horn Canyon. I was anticipating seeing Zebra Canyon further on and had no idea how neat Big Horn would be. We hit one section of slot canyon that must have been at least half a mile long! Near the lower end of Big Horn we went up the left fork of Big Horn for a bit; it is another great slot. Big Horn empties into Harris Wash, where you head down wash to pick up Zebra. Zebra only has a short section that you can get through, but it has some neat striped rock walls. It had knee deep water in a few holes and gets extremely narrow in spots. I didn't get photos as good as I wanted, because I could not get all the way to the end (nearly got stuck trying though).
After checking out Zebra, we went up alongside it and followed it from above. The area above it is really neat: big sand dunes in places, striped rock in others, and round iron concretions the size of marbles ("moqui marbles") to the size of baseballs that have weathered out of the sandstone in other spots. It seemed like a long slog back to the car in spite of the beauty, and our water just made it. |
