| I went on a hike on Saturday, April 19th, 2009. We started by leaving a shuttle vehicle at the Mill Creek (31E78) Trailhead on Kern Canyon Rd.. We drove over and parked at the Remington Ridge Trail (32E51), and the four of us prepared to hike. We started hiking up the well-maintained trail at 5:30 with headlamps to provide us with light in the dark. We hiked up the trail 5.5 miles into a pine forest and Lighter peak (6375’). The elevation gain was 3850’, and it was getting warm so everyone started removing layers. After signing the register we made our way South down the ridgeline toward Hobo Peak. We descended from Lightner, and then worked our way through the pine forest along the ridgeline. The distance to Hobo Peak (6370’) was 1 mile with an elevation gain of about 250 feet. There was no register, but we did find a geologic marker. After eating a little on Hobo we started making our way Southwest towards Breckenridge Mountain. We hiked down to Forest Route 28S19 and continued on for another 1.25 miles until we reached Lightner Flat. From there we headed down Breckenridge Rd for 2.75 miles to the turn towards Breckenridge campground near Squirrel Meadow. The elevation gain on this section was about 900 feet. We cached some water, and reached the campground .5 miles later where we stopped and ate. After lunch we started heading toward our final destination which was Breckenridge Mountain (7548’). We climbed our way up for about 1.25 miles with an elevation gain of 950 feet and we reached the peak at 1:30. There is a fire lookout there that is closed right now but we climbed up as far as could. The view was amazing! We decided to look around for a register, and we made a class 3 ascent to the top of some boulders and located it. We had walked 12.25 miles to this point and ascended 6000 feet in 8 hours. We made our back to Breckenridge campground, and then on to Squirrel Meadow (2 miles). We turned at the correct sign to reach the Mill Creek Trail, but somehow we missed it. We decided to make our way back to Lightner Flat (2.5 miles away), and then take an alternate trail to the Mill Creek Trail. We made it back to Lightner Flat and located a small road. We followed the road down into a ravine, but it came to an end. We continued on down, but the ravine narrowed and the trail we were looking for was nowhere to be found. The bushwhacking became intense, and we crisscrossed the ravine many times making use of game trails and etc.. After about 4-5 miles we reached the Mill Creek Trail, and it was dusk. We jogged the last 2 miles with headlamps on until we reached our shuttle car at 8:30. The total distance was 25.75 miles with an elevation gain of 7700 feet. We climbed three peaks, and the entire adventure took 15 hours. This hike had a little of everything including great company, and was an absolute blast. Photos | |

| There was a summit register tucked in among the rocks at that pinnacle you climbed. Seems you missed it - probably the storm, eh? :-) | |

| Parked about 1.5 miles short, hiked to lookout, scrambled up rock outcrop to the pinnacle. This looked like the HP to me. The map shows an extra contour on the hill immediately west. I also hiked it, circled the fence, tagged high rocks, but my senses still tell me the pinnacle on the east (lookout) peak is higher. Anyone have the same feeling? A storm kicked up as I got to the top and chased me back to my truck with lightning and hail! Full report: Breckenridge Mountain 5/29/09 | |

| What a beautiful fall excursion and what beautiful views there were to be had above the clouds. Nice and uncrowded. I also hiked the lower portion of the Mill Creek Trail on March 17, 2007. Wonderful trail, saw lots of Sierra Newts and wildflowers! | |
