| Up Register Ridge to Harwood, traverse over to Baldy, and down Ski Hut Trail. Glad I hit Register Ridge early with frozen dirt. Seems like it would be a pretty loose slog otherwise. | ||

| We could see the Baldy Notch below us so we followed a ski run down towards it for about 1 mile. We made a cross country drop, and we reached the Mount Baldy lodge about ¼ mile later where we noticed that the lift was running. We went past the lodge, and continued climbing up. We ascended on a ski slope for a considerable distance with another dormant ski lift on our right this time. We located the trail at the top, and started climbing up the ridge. We followed the ridgeline trail that had narrow corridors, and lots of happy hikers coming down. We made a cross country scree slog up and off the trail to the windy summit of Mount Harwood. It was 2 miles from the notch to the top of Mount Harwood (9552’). The total distance from Thunder to Mount Harwood was approximately 3.25 miles with an elevation gain of 1712’. We could see Mount San Antonio ( Mount Baldy ) very clearly from there so we made our way back to the trail and then hiked towards it. Photos | ||

| On the way to Baldy, a pretty unassuming peak, yet the north and NE faces of this peak are pretty intense when looked down I must say. | ||

| Hiked in from Manker Flats via the register ridge trail. First time on that trail. Definitely a challenge, but its a great way to avoid the crowds on the ski hut trail. Did Baldy and down the ski hut trail on the way back. | ||

| TripoliRick | Winter Snow/Ice Challenge ![]() | |
| For years I bypassed this "peak" on my way up Devil's Backbone to summit Baldy. I took a Snow Survival & Igloo Building class from The Backpacker Shop in Claremont where we learned ice axe and cramponing on the north slopes of Devil's Backbone and I would look up at this snow/ice covered face to the west and asked "Is that Baldy?" No, that's Mt Harwood. WOW, maybe someday I'll...Over the years I have taken people to this place as a great place to do winter snow & ice stuff. The low winter sun never hits the north side of Devil's Backbone in January and so it usually has snow on bad years when nothing else in SoCal has any. To climb the "North East Face" of Harwood, one needs to catch it early on good years when the loose broken rock is held in place by snow and ice. On the north side of Harwood are several fun routes up various chutes and spurs. Between these and the NE Face is a prominant ridge we called "Easy Street" that we frequently used for descending back to Stockton Flats. This is a great area to find snow and ice practice in the winter but be careful late in the season or thin snow conditions for rock fall! Harwood frequently gets some awsome cornices on the north side in good snow years. | ||

| Just wanted to bag this peak after my first failed attempt in full snow up the register ridge. I took the normal route up the backbone this time, which offered fabulous views. | ||
