It was like playing in a giant sandbox! Brittany had a wonderful time at the Bruneau Dunes! It's a very interesting area with a geat view.

The Wasatch Mountain Club has been organizing Annual ski trips in October to the dunes for about the last fifteen years, I've been the organizer the last 4 years, lately it has been listed on telitips forums also.

from the top. We try to make it out here once a year to really feel what a lot of sand in your shoe feels like.

50 minutes to top of the eastern dune HP, with loose sliding sand. Stayed at Broken Wheel, and they are renovating the restroom. Smelly outhouses left a stench on me and my car and stuff for days.

Ah, yes. One of the very first places I visited when I came to Idaho. We camped overnight and it was as cold as any night I've spent in the mountains. Walked over the dunes the following day. Nice starlit sky.

Had to make a quick trip to Mt. Home on business and found a few hours to zip down to the dunes. Great place, but the blinding sand and wind were terrrible.

My notes from my journal from the day I climbed Bruneau Dunes... "Sitting on top of one of the dunes at Bruneau Dunes State Park in Idaho. Down below are flocks of honking geese on a lake. They're making a racket, and faintly in the distance I can hear several fighter jets. The lake is still frozen and it shimmers in the intense sun. All the geese are congregated around a center portion that is unfrozen. A flock or two will take off and land at intervals; as they do so the honking increases. The dunes are so sharply set against the bright blue sky, only a few clouds float overhead to soften the view. The sand is a soft tan, fine and smooth. More geese are arriving now and a jet is flying overhead."

Wow, this page brings back memories. I was born in Mountain Home, Idaho, but only lived there for a few years. Contrary to its name, the city is located in the middle of the desert and all of the snowy mountains are far away. This made Bruneau Sand Dunes the number 1 place to climb on the weekend. My parents especially enjoyed fishing in the nearby lake.
