ShastaCascadeSuccessful Cone Climb  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Jun 27, 2009

First time I had been to that area of the park, very hot that day. Beautiful scenery from the summit!

This mountain was great for teaching me about the effects of elevation and the result of climbing in the afternoon. The deep gravely substance that makes up Cinder Cone made it very hard to climb. This combined with hot afternoon temps made my ascent less than enjoyable; however, when I reached the top the feeling of success far outweighed any hardship. This is a beautiful day hike that is a must do for anyone visiting Lassen. Might I suggest a 2-3 day backback trip in from Summit Lake ranger station.

We summited Cinder Cone during a wonderful hike around Snag Lake and Butte Lake. Traversed the Painted Dunes as well. Strange, impressive landscape.

34 sixth-graders, 1 teacher, and 8 chaperones from John Morse Waldorf Methods School in Sacramento, climbed to the top on a gorgeous day. Many explored the inner crater as well. What a stunning view.

Little Mountain GoatAge five and six  Sucess!

i first climbed it when I was five, my dad carried me some on his shoulders. We descended the back trail through the lava beds.

I climbed it again when i was six. this time, my dad didn't carry me. we also visited the crater, which was just like climbing the mountain again when coming out. descended back side again.

The views are great and this is pretty easily climbed. Did this and Prospect Peak (has no one put up a page for that?) in one half-day.

SeanReedyFirst Camping Trip
Date Climbed: Oct 10, 1984

I did this when I was about 8 on the first family camping trip in the custom VW camper my dad still has almost 25 years later. I remeber my first experience of pain from hiking being the soreness in my calves the next day after the struggle up the loose cinders. From what I read from the others postings, I'll be sure to revisit.

Digglergreat area!  Sucess!

Hiked up this during one of my early tours de Lassen, with Rachel, whilst doing a Snag Lake-Butte Lake loop. Amazing area- with the overcast skies & ominous weather, I felt like I was in prehistoric times like portrayed on TV, with volcanoes blowing up everywhere, & dinosaurs stomping around between them under black skies.

Camped at Butte Lake and strolled up to the top the next day. Didn't see anybody else back there except for a ranger. Great views - that's a very neat part of the park.

Backpacked in from Summit Lake North campground. About 15 miles in sandals. Very slow and painful process going up to the cone from loose volcanic gravel. Nice to walk down into the cone. Great view of Lassen.

nikolaieverybody loves Cinder Cone

my first ever backpacking trip was closed out by scampering up this awful pile of cinders. I remember the incredible amount of grit in my boots. It's hard work walking up Cinder Cone (down is easy and fun).

Dayhike from SR44, a very fun day with perfect weather (once the sun came up... it was 13° when I started). Great views of Lassen from the summit rim, and an interesting formation to explore.

Bubba SuessMy favorite view in Lassen  Sucess!

This is probably my favorite view in Lassen. You get the Mountain, plus the lakes and all the cool lava flows. Great all around.
