Got to love spring hiking in Southern New Mexico when the temp is perfect and the wind is 50 kts! I agree this is one of the best hikes in the area with incredible scenery the entire way. Don't forget your camera and plenty of Mbs.

Can’t beat the Organs for a nice prominent view of the whole world and the ‘Plateau’ is a great example. Lizrdboy and I took a detour probably 3miles in from Topps Hut, up a steep, narrow canyon to the south. Made for some fun and exciting ‘hands-on’ scramble\climbing that eventually connected with the main canyon again through a narrow keyhole pass. Got intimate with several varieties of cactus along the way, but well worth a summit that featured some lingering snow and big ol’ ponderosa’s.

I totally agree with your comments and email, this is one of the best hikes in Southern New Mexico. Challenging but not too difficult and great scenery! It sounds like your climb was quite memorable... especially the aftermath! Thanks for signing the log.

In the old literature, this chunk of rock is referred to as the Rabbit Ears Massif, so I will stick to that.

(First ascent) I'll never forget this day as it was the day before my daughter was born and one of the roughest "trails" I had ever ascended (not counting off-trail bushwhacking) to one amazing view high up in the Organs. We had wonderful weather, warm for early October, but little did I know when I returned home that I'd be up at 3 something the following morning, still wasted from the adventure that ended less than twelve hours before, to head to the hospital for another multi-hour affair that gave us our wonderful daughter.

(Second ascent) January 2006 - my wife was jealous of my previous ascent

I came up the north canyon and enjoyed some fun rock hopping and scrambling while looking up at the soaring rock walls and pillars. Summitted in late afternoon and made it back down just before a storm rolled in.
