Date Climbed: Aug 21, 2009

Climbed each route on different days with Brenton Peterson. Ears Between is a better route, but they are both good. Fun "cragging day" in the Bugs!!

Mary and I started late from Appleby Camp (around 10AM). The morning started off nicely, but thick gray clouds were rolling in as we reached the base of the route. Lots of fixed belays were visible, so we started climbing and planned to bail if needed. With two pitches remaining, it started to snow and it was already quite windy and cold. We topped out and made our way down the east ridge back to camp. After that, Mary wanted nothing more to do with the Bugaboos (and alpine climbing in general), so we hiked out and went to the hotel in Golden.

Separate trips, but great experience on both routes. Lion's Way was less inspiring than Ears Between. I think the position and working the chimney were neat features on the Ears Between.

Started climbing Lion's Way mid morning, up to the summit and down in 3 hours; since it was early we went for Tiger's Trail, this took much longer...we got to the Kain Hut that was already dark...a really beautiful day, my first in the Bugaboos..

Climbed Ears Between on the South Towers (Donkey Ears). Great route, we did the direct variation adding two 5.8 pitches below the standard start on the prominent ramp. We topped out to see and hear thunder coming at us from the Howser Towers area. The descent got a little scary when we were rapping the route with lightning hitting the peaks all around us and torrential hail streaming down from above. It was dark too. Still a great time though. Definately recommended, just watch the weather.
