| I had to take advantage of the unusually warm and dry Fall weather and get up into the high country. I started at the Magee TH on a cool morning with temps in the upper 20's. Much of the lower part of the trail was slightly frozen and crunched under my feet as I hiked up it. It was sunnier and warmer a bit higher up, but snow patches became abundant, developing into ankle deep snow by the time I reached the peak. The snow was cold and powdery, so my feet stayed dry depite just wearing trail runners. I reached the end of the steep climb to Magee Peak in about 1.25 hours, but then braved extreme wind chill on the crater rim to continue on to Crater Peak. |
