| I hiked up this trail with my friend and seasonal co-worker Joe Houck on 7/14/03. Lost touch with Joe and can't seem to find him no matter what I do, but it's a great memory to picture that crazy sweating guy, hiking up on a 90-degree day with a 40-oz. travel mug full of hot coffee, chain-smoking grade F cigarettes, haha. It's also quite humbling to realize that we were two of the last people in this generation to ever see Apgar Mtn. as it was before the Roberts Fire (which would start several days later): lush, green, thick woods lined with ferns offering sparse views through the brush until you reach the top.
I returned on 8/5/08 and did the whole round-trip in an hour and 45 minutes. So different I barely recognized it as being the same hike! The top is still the same, and the views are much better now, but it was a very strange feeling returning to such a transformed landscape. |
