Another weekend backpack trip .. up Salmon Creek to San Carpoforo Trail to Three Peaks, followed South Coast Ridge Rd. to Lion Den camp .. popular during the springtime !

Early in the morning headed out and got up to Silver Peak, then followed the road south from there, meaning to find the cross-country route down to Buckeye camp, but went to the end of the road instead. Went on a quite memorable bushwhack down several gullies and finally intersected Buckeye trail about 1.5 miles from the old guard station.

Helicopters and SAR personnel were out on the Salmon Creek trail all weekend looking for a missing hiker ..

First peak of 2009. Long beautiful drive with expansive views, short, somewhat bushy hike with less expansive views. Only worthwhile I'd say as part of a longer hike up Salmon Creek or the Cruickshank. From the road it is pretty average. The views from nearby Alder Peak are much more impressive and wide-ranging. Lion Den Camp is nice.

Hiked up the Buckeye trail to Cruikshank trail, then Silver Peak Road. From Highway 1 I'd guess it was about 4000' gain and 12 miles. Camped at Lion's Den, then returned to my car via the Salmon Creek trail.

Cool and partly cloudy weather - great for hiking. The Ventana Wilderness was still closed because of this past summer's fires, and probably will be until spring 2009.
