ScottEarliest attempts of Nordwand

Voted 10/10

Because if its famous north face, the Eiger is one of the most famous and written about peaks in the world. The battle to climb this face has captivated the interest of climbers and non-climbers alike since the time of the first attempt in 1934.

If you are interested, according to the book Eiger-Wall of Death, there were at least two attempts of the Eiger before the Lowinger/Beck attempt in 1934, but unfortunately no names are given.

Quoting from page 43 of the above mentioned book:

In 1924, and again in 1932, local guides had tried the Nordwand, but without the newer techniques and equipment of direct-aid climbing, they had been unable to get any higher than the windows of the Eigerwand Station, a not inconsiderable achievement under the circumstances.
