The following appears in the current version of the page:
"2) An enjoyable and less crowded approach to Mt Sill follows the South Fork of Big Pine Creek (cross country, 3rd class), to base camps somewhere below Mount Gayley and Temple Crag. Much talus is encountered on this approach."
I think the mention of 3rd class could really be changed to 2nd class without disagreement, don't you? There's a lot of talus and some bushwhacking on the approach to either Lake Elinore or the high tarns in the south-of-Gayley area, but I wouldn't say that 3rd class climbing is required to reach any of the decent basecamp areas in those regions.
That was left over from an earlier version of the page, before I started maintaining it. Since I hadn't been there in many years I decided to leave it as-is. If you've been that way recently and can vouch for its being class 2 I'll change the page.
Sorry it took me months to come back and notice your reply! I forgot to check back on this issue. So yes, last Labor Day I was up that way for the third time in three years, and I promise the route is 2nd class at worst. Even in the parts that bear very little resemblance to a trial, hands are used only for balance, never required for progress. It is difficult hiking, but unless they are off route, no one should mistake it for climbing of any sort. Thanks for your reply.
