A map would be VERY helpful... when does Haute Provence Alps become Alpilles, and is the Alpes-Maritimes and Alpilles just different names or is one a part of the other?

It's really lovely areas, those parts!!

Basse Provence mountains are not really part of the alps. Alpilles are in Basse Provence small ranges witch are described in the neglicted "Provence range" page. They are very good rock climbing sites there: Calanques, Sainte Victoire, Buoux, Montmirail. Except in summer because it's too hot and there is some fire risk, you can do nice hikes here, and dream like ancient poets..

Haute Provence mountains are part of the Alps.

Maritimes Alps are not part of the Provence : they belongs to Nice county and to Italy. This is the end of the Alps finishing in the sea in Monaco and Vintimiglia, but some summits are higher than 3000m. As long as i know, there is nothing about that part of the Alps in SP. Maybe in another life...

Cheers,

Olivier
