The French alps have very interesting peaks, much more jagged and glaciated than the Rocky Mountains where I live. Our mountains are more like glorified hills than true peaks, for the most part. A good example of our peaks is the state of Colorado's highest: Mount Elbert. Some of the mountains within the Rocky Mountain system are more rugged and glaciated, but there are some even more "hill-like" than Elbert. As you will see on the Mount Elbert page, the altitude is fairly high at about 4,400 meters (14,440 feet). Thus, altitude and weather are the biggest concerns when "climbing" in the mountains. Nearly every mountain can be climbed without use of ropes. Thanks for you reply.
