Great page on the northern Sawatch. Fools peak is near the 4000m peak Gold Dust. There are a couple of lakes and probably lots of trout in the brooks. Camping details, weather and avalanche updates are available. A route traversed by the author is described

Thanks for the vote. Fools is indeed near to Gold Dust and it provides a fine view of the mountain. At the top I imagined the roar of an A-10 passing by. As for fish, they are there too. There were some nice fish cruising the outlet of Mystic Island Lake.

Great job on a really great mountain. Its beauty is matched by its ruggedness and would be a climber's paradise with many technical options available. Certainly a solid piece of rock! This page describes the mountain and area very well and the pictures are great!

Thanks for the vote. Thanks also for your advice on the area as a whole. I've been in love with the area since my first step over Half Moon Pass. You helped make this page possible.

Nice page, I would like to get into this area some day. It looks really beautiful. Do you have any idea where this mountain gets its name?

I'm not sure how the name came about. There was some mining back in there and I would guess that miners gave it the name. Maybe some fools were digging in a bad place up there.

Thanks for the vote. Although this is a wilderness area, the hanggliding opportunities are profuse. I say, "Damn the red tape and give it a go!"

Thanks for the vote. Yes, I think you would like this mountain. An even better option might be Eagle Peak, located a mile to the west. Looks like you could combine it with Fools for a long day hike.

Fools Peak is a nice looking mountian. Thanks for sharing it. The idea of spelunking and climbing in on one trip sounds apealing too.

Thanks Jon. Fools is really nice. Pictures can't do it justice. It's awesome when viewed from just below Mystic Island Lake. Fulford is nice too. It's been many years since I visited it. If memory serves me, Spring Cave is in the neighborhood too.

This might be a good "CO intro" peak for my girlfriend. Great page!

Thanks Barry. There are quite a few good peaks in that area. Some of them would be right at home in the Gore Range.

Hey Everybody, this peak is really one of the best in Colorado if you come from the north. It is probably named for Fools gold since this is a mining area. The traverse between Fools and its easterly neighbor Eagle Peak is a technical climb, not a hike. There are some gendarmes to overcome. A light alpine rack and 50 meter rope is sufficient.
