Texas is gonna have more mountains than Colorado before you are through! I'm going to BBNP in January. I plan to add a few myself.

Which peaks do you plan on climbing? Lost Mine, Casa Grande?

Vernon Bailey, Emory, and Casa Grande. I'm gonna check around before I go because I think there is a technical route on Casa Grande.

Yes. I know Emory has a page. IT's MINE! :) Yeah, I have to go back and climb it because my partner several years ago was tired and wanted to quit after our rim hike. I got him as far as the Emory Peak Trail when we quit.

So you haven't climbed it, or just not on this try? I have been up Emory twice. One way back in 79. There were millions of lady bugs on the summit.

I didn't know Texas had mountains until SP, let alone more mountains than Colorado! I feel the heat of the competition already! Well done.

Very impressive Texas mountain!

Hunter Peak is same as another name of Mount Steeple : 5472m in southwestern China!

Hunter Peak is a nice mountain, but it doesn't compare to Mt. Steeple. Mt. Steeple is awesome. Thanks for the vote.

If you do climb Hunter, bushwack on over to Mt. Pratt. This will take you to some places that are rarely ever visited in the park. The summit isn't much (windblown and some views are obscured because of timber) but it is a cool hike nonetheless. When I climbed Pratt, I didn't have time to get over to it's subpeak and that may have much better views. To get there, keep following the ridge in route to Mt. Pratt. For Mt. Pratt you have to leave the ridge and make a quick detour over to the peak. The subpeak I am talking about is probably only about 20 feet lower and is located just to the northwest of Mt. Pratt (unnamed 8,342 ft.) Here are the exact coordinates of this subpeak. You should get a good view of Lost Peak from the summit.

If you are in for a challenge and are in good shape, do Bush, Bartlett, Shumard, Guadalupe, and El Capitan the same day. This would be a balls to the walls day with a lot of bushwacking but I know how you highlanders are, you love that kind of stuff. I did Bush Bartlett, Shumard in one day and I should have added Guadalupe because the bushwack down from Shumard was the bushwack from hell. If you do anything other than Guadalupe or Hunter, bring extra water. Even with cool temps, it can get hot when the sun is out because it heats up the ground beneath you very fast. There are no backcountry sources of water.

If for some reason the camping is already full at the Pine Springs camp, see the Guadalupe Peak page for alternatives. The BLM land in New Mexico will work and makes for an interesting camp. You will think you landed on the moon.

Good luck and let me know how it goes. Be prepared for WIND. Sometimes you will get lucky and it won't be too bad, but then again sometimes it will be hurricane force. The Pratt ridge will be WINDY if the wind is up, about 2/3rds of the way up the Guadalupe trail will be windy, and any summit will be windy.

O and watch out for rattlesnakes. I have read reports of them even close to the Guadalupe Peak trail. I haven't ever had to worry about them since I hike there in the winter. Take a good knife. Mountain lions do inhabit the park, especially in the remote areas.

Well, thanks a bunch for the information. I ended up only having time to do Hunter because of the group I was with, but I'm very intrigued by the idea of doing a big loop incorporating Hunter, Bush, Shumard, Bartlett, and Guadalupe. Sounds like a lot of fun! There were several campsites available at Pine Springs that night. The wind blew very hard overnight, but it wasn't too bad during the day. The hike was very nice, and I only saw two people the whole time. There were quite a few more on the Guadalupe Peak trail according to my friends. Once again, thanks for doing such a good job on all the Guadalupe Mountains pages!!

Glad you had a good time. That would be fun to do all of those peaks in one day, but you could also add El Capitan to that mix too.
