In the summer one can hike through the Kirkwood ski area to Thunder Mountain. There is also a trail from Silver Lake to Thunder Mountain

A valid fire permit (free) is needed to operate a stove. These permits along with any needed Wilderness permits can be obtained at the El Dorado National Forest Ranger Station on Hiway 88 near the town of Pioneer. They may obtained in the summer from the hut at Carson Pass.

There are fine websites by the local TV stations, notably thekcrachannel.com, which offers state of the art Doppler and other Sierra weather forecasts. Try also news10.net, fox40.com, and also the Channel 13 station, KOVR, a CBS affiliate. I often use weather.com for both local and distant forecasts, with often highly reliable, or at least reassuring, information. They all offer long-range forecasts-- extremely useful information for planning vacations.

Pete, I believe the coordinates need correcting. I believe the correct coordinates for Peak 9,410 should be 38.6768 degrees North and -120.0843 degrees West. (Coordinates for Peak 9,408 to the southwest are 38.6743 degrees North and -120.0898 degrees West) Overall nice page!

Thanks for the note!

I just went to TopoZone, and use what they have for the peak. My initial numbers were off quite a bit. But when I click on the coordinates, I get another map, not TopoZone. Wonder how that is.
