"J. A. Tinker was a 'rough, hard-driving, hard-drinking teamster' who hauled freight between Soda Springs and the mines of Forest Hill Divide. From 1867 to 1873 Soda Springs Station was known as Tinkers Station. The name 'Tinkers Defeat' was applied to a hairpin curve of the Soda Springs Road -- because one day, so the story goes, the teamster's load, drawn by eight horses, came to grief at this place (Knave, May 10, 1953). The knob was named for him with humorous reference to his nose (Doyle). According to a directory of 1867, James A. Tinker was the owner of the Tinker and Fenton Hotel on Donner Lake road."
