Great! Another reminder that Mount Washington in my home state of NH isn't the tallest peak in the east (as, by rights, it should be). Sheesh, all these mountains in NC with roads and trees on top. Then again, I live at 5600 feet at the moment and the little hill behind my house is taller than any of this stuff.

Size matters not.

Anyway, another good peak. Cheers.

Yes, it's all relative. Craig and Mitchell and company do stand over 4,000 feet above the surrounding terrain, so they're impressive escarpments, regardless. There is that road to the summit of Mitchell, but much of the Black Mountains are roadless. Real wilderness. I was all alone on the trail for the entire day--not another soul around.

I hit five of the 6K foot peaks here in NC yesterday. Ran out of time or I'd have hit two more.

I'll add the information later. Yeah, there's more than one way to the summit. There's Bolen's Creek and Colbert Creek and Big Tom Gap. Just haven't had time to add the routes.

Yeah, just add distance. Same for Potato Hill...add the distance from the 179 trailhead or wherever. Once those routes are in, these pages will really kick ass. Then you should create a mountain group called "Mt. Mitchell State Park) or "Black Mountains, North Carolina"...kind of like the Presidential Range in New Hampshire. Looking forward to it.

You can also climb Mt. Craig from Black Mountain Campground...6 miles to Mt. Mitchell, and whatever extra distance to Mount Craig and back...Probably 14+ miles. Or you could drive up to the Mount Mitchell Parking lot and hike it from there...Can't be far, can it?

Looks like this one is 5 feet taller than Clingman's unless you are on the forest service viewing tower. Hope the firs and spruces aare better here than on the Dome.. Great page and panorama.

Yes, the fraser firs are recovering nicely. Places where I was hiking in the sunshine ten years ago are once more in the shade. Many of the seedlings from years past are now upwards of sixteen to twenty feet tall. The new trees are gathering about the dried stalks of the dead balsams and all but making them invisible in many places. The Black Mountains are, indeed, black again.

Nicely done page. The route could be more specific. You just say that it is a gruelling hike but that's about all.
