The trail doesn't end at the summit of Fiske Peak. It continues along the crest of the Blue Ridge above Fiske Creek and Rumsey Canyon drainages on to the summit of Lowrey Peak (higher than Fiske) and thence onto the s. trailhead 4.5 miles beyond Fiske Peak. Hikers can continue down that road to the junction of Fiske Creek then follow the old fire break road along the creek bottom, excellent raparian and oak studded grasslands and chapparal. It is best to follow that road back up to Rayhouse Rd. rather than continue class 2 down the creek bed, specially when there's water flowing. 18+ mile round trip and a very good winter work out. I 2nd the caution about mountain lions as well. Once when hiking the ridge in the rain I came across lion prints the size of my hand and the print cups had no water in them. As I proceeded along the trail the prints were progressively filled with water. I figured the beast heard me coming and darted off the trail. I had this itch on the back of my neck for the rest of the hike that day, felt certain alien eyes were sizing me up. I figure MOST hikes have those eyes upon us, but I really felt it that day.
It is also possible to follow firebreaks up from the Cache Creek Bridge on Hwy 16, over Rumsey Point (my name), up on to the flanks of Fiske then follow a mile long class 2 trail I blazed to the summit from the end of the fire break, up a ridge and to the summit of Fiske. I use the term 'blaze' loosely. It is cairned and I cleared a bunch since the fire, but savy and sense will be required to find it. Its actually easier to find it by climbing the normal trail and descending the new route. I'll submit a formal 'route' with a map at some point in the not too distant future, along with some additional photos.
