Good post. I've never been to Betty's Rock. Looks like a nice little jaunt.

Cool picture of the bare trees on the ridge dominated by the big oak. Looks like quite a worthwhile excursion. Liked summit the panoramas too.

How high are the cliffs in the park? Any fairly high ones?

I am working on some pages, two or three, for some cliff areas in the park. They offer good climbing, but nothing huge like the walls in Utah. After SP is functioning at full speed again, I'll put those pages up.

30-50 feet generally. However, there are spots along the Little Devils Staircase, for which I put a route page up on Hogback Mountain, that I think are well over 100 feet, and maybe more. The cliffs along that route are actually quite impressive.

Like this one at the Little Devils Staircase:

There is also one by Hawksbill and Bettys Rock called Crescent Rock. In addition, there are some cliffs on Mount Marshall that are pretty large, including the one I call "the fist" which is on the Mount Marshall page. I did some free climbing right off of Skyline Drive near Mary's Rock where you perhaps have 200 foot cliffs that require some rope.

Got to do some more climbing before that happens. It's rought trying to get away in the middle of the school semester. I should have some this summer.

Tell me about it...I am stuck in DC, working and grad school, so I try to hit Shenandoah once a month (and I will try to branch out and hit other Virginia peaks over Spring Break). I really want to move out West to make mountain climbing a priority.

Will be in Colorado in mid-May 2005 for a conference...so I must climb a mountain while I am there!
