Tioga Peak Additions and Corrections

There's a whole paragraph on how "Tioga" came to be a CA place name. I recommend reading "Place Names of the Sierra Nevada," by Peter Browning. "From Abbot to Zumwalt." My copy ran $11.95, but you should see it at many Eastern Sierra bookstores, probably for a bit more, now. Try the USGS Geographic Names Information System website for some free browsing on place names.

I actually own a copy of Place Names of the Sierra Nevada- a good book. I mentioned the peak's naming because I thought others might find it an interesting note while viewing the SP page.

The word Tioga, originally from the Iroqois, comes from miners from New York whose county was named that.
