It seemd to be saying that an ice axe was optional if one was "uncomfortable" on icy snow. It is absolutely necessary except in dry years at the end of the season, when the route is an unworthwhile scree climb. HAVE AN AXE AND KNOW HOW TO USE IT! I have seen and heard to too many people doing dumb and incompetent things on this route that should be straight forward as long as one is familiar with snow climbing fundamentals. If you don't knwo what you're doing, go with a guide and learn how.
Also, Av Gulch is not the easiest route, it is just the most accessible. The lowest angle and technically easiest route is the Clear Creek route, however, it is rarely in season (condition) and difficult to access both vehicularly as well as in terms of approach. (Great moderate ski descent though when in season)
The ice axe is listed as an essential item for climbers uncomfortable on icy snow. I did not use my ice axe on the climb, so it was not essential because I was comfortable on the frozen snow. I've changed the overview stating that Avalanche Gulch is not the technically easiest route. Thanks for the feedback.
