This is the saddle just North of the top of the boiler plates on the Cottonwood Creek approach (you can't see The Peak or The Needle from the main valley), and if you miss going up into this saddle, you'll end up in the top of the gorge underneath Milwaukee Peak instead of Cottonwood Lake.
In preparing for my ascent of Crestone Peak (August 14, 2005), I read about the boiler plates on the Cottonwood Creek approach, but didn't really know what to expect. I'm posting a picture we took of one of them. They were fine when dry, but treacherous when wet, especially since we had full packs. Descending in the rain, we couldn't find any good way around some of the worst slippery areas. I was more concerned on them than I was on any part of the climb up the red gully.
