You can actually start a little higher than summit lake. The second major swithback will have a large, obvious pulloff. Take the trail 50 yards and you will see the east face of bierstadt. The gully is easier than it looks and will direct you to Gomer Creek trail in the lower valley. Take the trail past abyss lake (stay left) and finally up the face. I stayed away from the ridge (sawtooth). The snow makes an easy glacading descent.
