Direction
The recommended route is to do the hike in the counter clockwise direction starting at the Kīlauea Iki parking lot. This has two advantages.
1) The excellent NPS trail guide is available at the trail head.
2) Going in this direction, you descend into the crater via a quite steep trail and exit via a well graded moderate trail through thick vegetation - something to keep in mind if it is very hot.
