What types of rock are usually behind that "notorious loose rock"?

Primarily volcanic-igneous rock that cooled very rapidly and fractured. The Grenadier Range, a sub range of the Needles, are an upthrust of granite surrounded by the loose rock stuff. There's pretty good, consistent climbing there. Once you're used to the loose rock, it's not so badm but for the uninitiated, it's unnerving.
