It's already full of substance, and it's better you tell me when you're done, and I'll look again, because otherwise I will just forget about it's existence, when it's sunk down from "What's new"

I didn't realize how good the other pages were until I tried to create my own! I will repost this to the "What's new in CA" forum topic when I feel it's done. Maybe by Sunday. Thanks for the review!

Any extra info on parking legality?

My wife and I drove to New Idria on Friday night, 3/17/06, and were sleeping in the car at the "crotch" of the Y in the road just above New Idria. We got there at approx 11pm. The road was muddy, and I drive a 4 door Saturn Ion, which wasn't going to make it very far. So we parked to get some sleep and in the morning we'd just hike from the car. But every 15 minutes or so a pickup truck hauling dirt bikes or a cargo van would go by and fishtail up the mud and then stop at the next turn in the road. Apparently there was some big get together going on up in the CCMA. This turn in the road got to be a staging area for vehicles making an attempt at the next stretch of road. I saw a van go roaring up the road and bounce up and over what must have been a big bump, then got stuck in the mud farther up. Eventually, a van and a truck were idling right by our car and the owners were out talking about how they were going to get up there. THEN a guy comes down the road on a 4-wheeler and tells these guys that this is private property and they can't park their vehicles there (right where I was parked, too!). The 4-wheeler guy never talked to me directly and I don't think he knew we were sleeping in the car. Eventually, the van and truck drivers talked the 4-wheeler guy into helping them get up the hill. They all left so I left too, vowing to come back when the road was drier. We ended up sleeping by a BLM sign for the Garrison(?) Hills on the New Idria road. We went to Pinnacles NM for the weekend instead.

Also as an FYI, the right turn at the Y above New Idria had a locked gate across it with a NO TRESPASSING sign.

So my questions: Is parking legal from New Idria to the boundary of the CCMA? Is parking legal in New Idria? Where exactly is the boundary of the CCMA? Do I have the right to park my car at that Y above New Idria?

Hmph, I've been up that road on the right 1/4 mile, and never saw a gate, I wonder if I have the right Y in mind (but that was last year). My sense for legality is that you can park the car there in same way you can park along any public road provided you aren't blocking something or riding up on someone's property. Overnight parking might be frowned upon by local authorities. Of course, "local authorities" does not mean police here, it means the people that hang around there, which is entirely unpredictable. If you want to sleep somewhere nearby, I'd recommend the BLM areas approximately 20 miles before New Idria (I'll try to find the name of that and incorporate all this in the page). Thanks for all the info!

We slept in the parking area for Griswold Hills, which is on the W side of the road about 20 miles before New Idria. Seems to be a BLM access parking area with a BLM information sign.

Thank you, that's what I needed. I googled all over the place trying to find those areas. I've got the link in there now. Thanks, again!

If you have any pictures, please submit! It turned out all of my summit photos were hero shots, so I left them out. The images section on this page is a little skimpy.
