Many of the small lakes in Desolation Valley are named after some men who used to stock them with fish in the 1920's. The names are four letters in length, with the exception of Frata Lake, and are contractions of the first and last names of men they are named after. The first two letters of the first and last names are combined to create the lake names and are as follows:
Waca - Walter Campbell
Toem - Tom Emerel
Ropi - Ross Pierce
Gefo - George Foss
Osma - Oswald Maybeck
Jabu - Jack Butler
Frata - Frank Talbot
Thanks chskier, good addition. I've always wondered where those strange names came from. Any idea where the name for Herlan Peak originated? -Fred Weyman
