Voted 10/10 | I found it interesting to learn how the strange name of Dixie Butte came to be. The area was named by Civil War rebels who came to eastern Oregon in 1865. Here they established gold mining claims along Dixie Creek, just north of the present day town of Prairie City. Hasn't voted | for the compliment. The mountains ringing the John Day Valley have always been my favorites, I hope to add more to the site as I get time and some of the snowpack melts off them allowing me access. I was going to attempt a Vinegar Hill / Indian Rock trek during spring break, but my Dixie trip was somewhat of an eye-opener as to just how cold it is at 7500 feet this time of year. | |
