Voted 10/10 | I am under the impression they have been wiped out by disease from domestic sheep, nobody I have talked to has seen them in years. Are there still some around? I didnt see any sign of them this weekend. When I hiked Canyon Mountain in the 80's there were deep trails cut into the mountain by the Bighorn Sheep, I saw no such trails this year. Nice page, geologic history of Canyon Mountain is interesting. I looked for the Ophiolite while I was up there, but I dont think I would recognize it if I saw it. If you have a picture of it you should definitely post it. | |

Hasn't voted | I was also unable to see any sheep, and only knew about them through one of Sullivan's books. The whole mountain is actually ophiolite. It is a common misconception that ophiolite is a rock or a mineral, but it is actually the whole sequence of them that forms at spreading centers in oceanic crust. I added a link to a page describing a generalized ophiolite complex. If you would like to know more about this particular one, Hiking Oregon's Geology and In Search of Ancient Oregon both by Ellen Morris Bishop as well as Roadside Geology of Oregon by David D. Alt and David W. Hyndman have more detailed information. | |
