Thanks. Yes-A good laugh for sure. I found all of the many labled mines amusing as well. I suppose it's only fitting that Democrat's BM is labled so small on the map, since the Democrats have a 14er to perch their pride on. I found this funny as well. I can empathize with both sides, but in this case, history called the shots and the higher point went to the Dems in this now strongly Republican state. This could get into quite the political conversation, but that should be done elsewhere, and I would likely not participate (at least not too much).

Andyice climbing and private property?

Voted 10/10

Hey Aaron - I heard there was some good ice climbing in that area (north side of I70 near Silver Plume). I've also heard of people getting chased off it by angry land owners (who may or may not own the land that the falls are on or the approach). Do you know anything about this? If so it would make a nice addition to your page.

Hi Andy!

There are some good but short ice falls that are in the lower stretches of Brown Gulch, not too far above the highway that are reportedly good for ice climbing. However, much of that area is indeed private property, so I wouldn't be surprised if there are conflicts involved.

Voted 10/10

An interesting piece of Americana you've got here, Aaron.
Edits:
It looks like you've got 12 feet for the height. I think you want 12,386 ft.
I'm confused by this text (I've added the italics to point out my confusion): " The tiny, almost imperceptible perch of Democrat Benchmark can be seen from Interstate 70 if one is traveling west toward Georgetown at the exit for Highway 40 over Berthoud Pass and Empire. But you need to know where to look and what to look at. Although a bit higher, Republican is even more elusive."
Aren't Democrat BM and Republican the same height (i.e., the BM is the summit of Republican Mountain)? Or for Democrat Benchmark did you really mean to refer to lower "Democrat Mountain" a half-mile NE of Republican Mountain.

Comments:
Did the Democrat BM appear before or after the summit was named "Republican Mountain" (by the USGS or otherwise)? This chronology might explain some things.
A little more irony: here in Seattle, known for its democrat majority, there is a "Republican Street" but there is no opposing "Democrat Street" in the city. I find myself driving or crossing Republican quite often. I bet the ultra liberals in this town just can't stand it. I'm surprised there hasn't been a grassroots movement to get it renamed Democrat Street.

Hi Paul. My daughter called and informed me of the height problem. I put a coma in the figure, so the server just went with 12 feet. It's fixed now. Democrat Mountain is not the same Democat BM indicated on the topo (in smaller font print). The Democrat BM is visible from the highway at the I-40 exit, Republican BM is visible only at the Silverthorn exit. Perhaps I should clarify that text, thenI'll delete this message. The actual summit is the Republican BM. I think Democrat was added later, by the appearance of the topo (rather humorous).

Colorado is a strong Republican, conservative state, but there's enough Dems to upset the cart when necessary, which probably drives Republicans crazy. Funny stuff! Thanks for stopping by.

Whoa! I've changed the page name to Republican Mountain and Democrat BM. It's only fair, after all, since the Dems have the 14er...

I'm confused. You talk about "two small rocky perches" but the topos show a single summit, named Republican, with a benchmark on it (labeled Democrat). The northeastern ridge also bears the "Democrat" name, and there's an unnamed peak on it (with a listed elevation, so maybe there's another survey mark there?).
Also, I don't see why the page is titled "BM" - it's the mountain that gets climbed, not the benchmark.

USGS GNIS shows the name "Republican Mountain" (nothing about "BM") at the coordinates you give:
http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=163:3:15165516968464433336::NO::P3_FID:181924
OK, there's also a Democrat Mountain nearby with an elevation of 11689. That seems to be a bump on the ridge "Democrat Mountain", just above the Astor mine (though it's not the bump with a measured elevation on the topo)
http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnispublic/f?p=163:3:15165516968464433336::NO::P3_FID:181925

In short, more clarity, less rivalry, please.

I'll clarify the text. The two "summits" are very close together, but with amazingly differing views. Republican is the higher "summit," and Democrat is the BM. I changed the name of the page as well. I've got a feeling there will be rivalry no matter what I do! ;>)

I thought the Colorado Statehouse had gone Democrat...or did the last election change that? (Meaning, the state may no longer be all that conservative....)

As usual, very good and interesting writing!
