It's a very cool place. I have a piece of petrified rock which I use as a paper weight.

Good job on a fascinating area! One suggestion, though: it might be worthwhile to incorporate a section on what created the petrification, and the time-frame involved. Interesting stuff!

I'd actually thought of making a page for this place when I was making my Badlands National Park page, and I'm glad to see someone did it. Such places don't fall strictly into the realm of climbing, but I think they definitely have a place on SP.

I visited the Petrified Forest as a child, on one of our many cross country trips. Your pictures brought back memories, the feeling of being there.

Mark DoironWhen We Visited ...

Voted 10/10

When Curtis and I visited in 1999 it was on a return trip from San Diego. Heh-heh. On the way out we'd spent the night at Rock Hound State Park in NM .. where they **encourage** you to take rocks home (if you've ever been there you'll understand why!). Anyway, as we entered Petrified Forest the ranger asks, "You don't have any rocks, do you?". We had to "register" our collection so that we wouldn't have any problems exiting the park at the other end. Thanks for the page, 2skinners and, of course, I've linked to it from the U.S. National Parks page. --mark d.

I've always wondered what it looked like! I drive past quite often on my way to Ruidoso NM from St. George, but am always rushed. After this page, I'll make it a point to stop!

Petrified Forest National Park actually contains the first areas set aside as Wilderness in the entire National Park System.

Beautiful area, we visited for the first time yesterday. I got some great photos that I will be added soon!

jpmossythe red tape section makes me laugh!

oh the red tape of petrified forest. too bad i ignored it all, while leaving the place just as I encountered it. some off the badlands off trail are gorgeous and there is some petrified wood you'd never see otherwise. I'll put up the very few photos i was able to salvage (my camera simply stopped working due to a tiny grain of sand in the lens mechanism!)
