Bob, very Abbey-esq writing in your TR. When you are out this way again, and do not have too many plans I would be interested in doing the ridge traverse with you. Keeop it in mind and great TR

I might be that way next summer (2008, just to be clear), and I'd love to get together! Let's keep it in mind.

And thanks for the feedback. My experience here was so moving that the page is very personal to me, so I really appreciate the nods of support from you and others.

Tim, thank you again, but this time even more so than all the times before. This place was a monumental, shaping experience for me, and writing about it carried great meaning to me. It means a lot when people I respect "get" it and appreciate it. I'd like to try the whole traverse next year, in fact. Maybe you'd be interested...

Bob, I think we should start planning for this traverse next summer. I know it is a long way off, but it might be the only way to make it happen is by starting early.
Cheers Again;

No problem-- my wife and I want to plan early so we can splurge on one of the nice balcony rooms overlooking the lake at Many Glacier Hotel, so we could finalize plans within the month. It'll be early July since our anniversary is July 3. We'll be out there about 9 days, but then I'm planning to stay out for up to another two weeks. So when we make those reservations, which should be soon, I can start planning everything else. I'd like to get out to some of those Bitterroot peaks you and Mike love, too.

samhA Little Research'll do Ya'

Voted 10/10

I mapped out this route yesterday evening as what seemed to be a good trip for this weekend and then today I figured I'd look into Summit Post to see if there was beta on it. Sure enough good ol' Bob has been there and given descriptions of the first part of what I want to do. My plan is to follow the ridge all the way around the Pine Creek Lake cirque and then drop into the set of three off-trail lakes to the NE. The next day I'd like to regain the ridge and summit McKnight before dropping down and hiking out the South Fork Deep Creek trail. Thanks for putting up some reassuring info, Bob.

Well, I'm glad to hear that this page has helped at least a little. I wouldn't be surprised if you find the ridge conditions a little easier than my description; when I was up there, I was still fairly new to the off-trail world, though I'd still caution to be wary of loose rock up there, as I do remember pieces moving under my feet and others coming out in my hands.

That sounds like a great trip. That country out there still inspires me to this day, just the memory of it. Have a great time!

Anyway

Bob, I shut myself down in my endeavor to hike Black, the ridge you describe here and then McKnight. Fear and self preservation turned me around off the ridge and back to the summit of Black wherein I dropped back into the basin, hiked across it and then up to the saddle of McKnight for the views North and East.

Woops-- I missed the part about your plans to completely traverse the cirque. I remember a nasty-looking notch about halfway between Black and where I went along the ridge. Even looking at a photo of it now, I still have doubts about whether I could have climbed that notch unroped. I thought about returning this summer to do the entire traverse, but as you already know, I settled for a couple of easier days in the Beartooths to end my trip.

Well, it sounds as though you had a good outing, anyway. I'm glad you enjoyed it. There's some really eye-opening scenery out there.
