I've been planning a first trip to the southern Winds for two weeks from now and always thought I'd go into the Cirque because, well, because it's the Cirque. But after reading several trip reports and descriptions including (maybe especially) the third paragraph on this excellent page, I've decided to switch over to the Washakie - Haily loop instead.

Thanks for the posting this information.

Thanks for the kind remarks.

If you do this trip, I really hope you'll enjoy it. Wilderness, lakes, scrambling, solitude, etc.-- it stands out as probably my favorite backpacking trip of all time. If you have time, don't miss side trips to Baptiste Lake and South Fork Lakes.

I recommend the approach from Big Sandy, though. Although the Bear's Ears Trail is really scenic and less popular (though harder), access from the east has been thorny in recent years (detailed in the Red Tape section).

Enjoy!

The plan is to come in from Big Sandy. I've seen your comments and excellent photos regarding those lakes, scoped them out on the map, and have made note of them. We are packing food for six nights in the backcountry, which should give us time enough for a some layover days and/or side trips. Thanks again.
