Hasn't voted | I am a trophy husband for my wife, who is independently wealthy and patiently waits at home while I dash around the country, always on her dime, of course. Okay, one look at a picture of me will tell you that's not true. Perhaps I could say that living near D.C. is cause enough to get away as often as possible! In truth, I am a teacher, and in the fifteen years I have been doing it, I have used my summers and two-week breaks around Easter and Christmas, plus some holiday weekends, to get out and see as much of this great country as possible. I've seen just about all the scenic areas of the country at least once (except for Alaska and Hawaii), and now I spend more time on the places I love best, which is why the majority of my summer-themed submissions come from Montana and Wyoming and Colorado and my spring-themed ones come from Utah and California (though I find your state fascinating and one of the best places to visit-- so much open, uncrowded, beautiful country). So it's looking like Death Valley and Zion in March, and Montana in July. I just wish the calendar would speed up. | |

Voted 10/10 | "Maps and guides do not mention any trails on the Peak, so these trails must have been abandoned some time ago, though some fresh-looking cuts on deadfall in one area made me wonder if some locals secretly maintain the trails for their own use. You can even find an old blazed trail all the way to the summit if you look very carefully." It's called The Peak Trail on the old USGS topo maps, and I found it to be in surprisingly good condition during my visits to The Peak in December 2006 and March 2007. I'll try to get some pictures developed over the next couple of days, and then I can submit a route page for the trail. There has been some unofficial maintenance on the trail. I ought to know, having cleared some leaves and branches off the trail last December. I met one of the maintainers on my St. Patrick's Day hike, and he told me that someone else put up a rock cairn at the start of the trail near Thorougfare Gap in early March. Hasn't voted | I actually did mention that trail as being shown on older maps (the Topozone link), but I've edited the section to make it a little clearer. Anyway, if the cairn was at the gap, where it would make sense to put it, I'm almost 100% certain it wasn't there last week. Maybe rangers took it apart, or maybe it's below the gap on its north side, where I didn't go. A route page would be nice, though, especially if it covers the branch I found leading to the mountain's southeastern spur. I kind of wish I'd headed out to it just for the sake of it.
