Voted 10/10 | I started out on an 18 mile, 3 day loop on Hazel Mountain. Left Friday afternoon from the Meadow Springs parking lot trailhead. Hiked about 4.5 miles and camped on the Hazel River Trail near an old homesite with a rock pile and an old chimney still standing.
During the hike and the night camping I had 11 black bear encounters, none of which I had to use my spray for, but two had me throwing rocks near the bears to scare them off.
After 5 nighttime black bear visits and one angry, snorting, stomping buck (almost no sleep), and with thunderstorms in the forecast for Saturday afternoon and evening I bailed out and hiked back to the car. I don't like confronting black bears when I'm out by myself, especially not 11 encounters in under 16 hours.
Aside from that the scenery was great and the trail had some difficult elevation gains at times - 500 feet in less than half a mile and almost 2000 feet over 4.5 miles - which made for a good workout with my pack on. The Cave Falls were a nice but strenuous side trip. |
