Bob SihlerNice page

Your recent photo of this formation got me interested in checking out this peak when I visit the Swell in October. This page has a lot of good information to help.

I also attached this page to my Badlands page and will soon update that page accordingly.

An interesting rock formation.
But how come no mention of what a wickiup is in the overview?
A wickiup is a type of tepee.

that it might be a volcano, it looks like one too, on the map. It is still beyond me why anybody would call this a tepee!

Thanks for the comments on this. I've updated the overview section with the definition of "Wickiup," and the most likely source of the name for the mountain.

Great page for one of those peaks I like to call a rest stop hike. Very informative with good exhibits.

lcarreauHey there WV ...

This formation lies in the San Rafael Swell area off 1-70, right?

When I look on the topo, I see several areas marked "prospects."
What exactly do these prospects consist of - are they old mine
shafts?

I think the rest of us "got shafted" for not discovering this
wonderful place much more quicker.

The Wickiup is just north of I-70. There are mine dumps all over the Swell area. Most of them were from the Uranium era, circa 1940's to the late 1950's. There are a couple old uranium mines very near the Wickiup area as well. Some of the prospect locations still have old cabins, chutes and old rusting equipment still there in place. Most of these prospect areas and mines are located in the Mossback Member, a part of the Chinle Formation geologically speaking. A lot of the old bulldozed mining roads that cross the area are now designated by the BLM for off road use, ATV's, AWD's, etc. The San Rafael Swell area as a whole is a huge playground, a fantastic area. One could spend weeks or even months there and still not see it all.

BLM is an abbreviation for Bureau of Land Management.

ok... public land, then? Why would they (= why are they able to) revoke access for the public? If it's public, it's "everybody's", isn't it?

It is public land, the BLM governs the uses of land available to the public. In effect if a specific area suffers over usage from ATV's, the BLM will cordon off that specific area for restoration purposes. Access is still available, however they can limit the way you access and impact the area.
