Thanks for putting this page up. I remembered Chimney Rock from reading about that "much ballyhooed, postcarded rock" in Bonney's guide in the 70s, and I was hoping to see it when I drove from Yellowstone to Cody a year ago, but I never did spot it. With your page, it would have been easy to locate. By the way, Bonney rated the climb "class 4," which I always thought was an obvious and outragious sandbag, just from the look of the thing in his picture.

Hey - thanks for the comment! Chimney Rock is really easy to miss when driving east, as I don't think there is a sign pointing to it. I always notice it on the way the Yellowstone, but at some point on the return journey, I find myself wondering if I've passed it or not...

Thanks for that info about Bonney's rating; I'm no expert, but I agree that there's no way it's a Class 4! I'll have to ask around with some rock climbers from this area to see if I can't get a more accurate rating for it.

Cheers!

If you remember, I mentioned in a PM that I might like to play around on Chimney Rock one of the afternoons at Rex Hale. I had always thought of Chimney Rock as the larger outcrop marked on topo maps. Wrong!

That is funny - I can definitely see how one could get messed up by that topo map! It's like three minutes from Rex Hale, so let's definitely go see it; maybe you can give me a better idea of a rating for the climb...
