Voted 10/10 | Interesting that RPC on his Calico Hills page shows the Calico Hills rising to 5200 feet. I am sure he is mistaken, however just noting it in case you wanted to alert him of his error and to make the pages cohesive.

Hasn't voted | I already have told him (sent a message early this morning). On his page, he writes that he doesn't know the actual highpoint. Anyway, I learned it from cp0915's book, and rpc will know it, too.

Voted 10/10 | Here's Graycap from Turtlehead Jr: Greycap ...It's the cream and red peak at right. The top is 5443', and only about the last 100' are limestone (hence the gray cap). Many popular "Calico Basin" climbing routes are on the south side of the peak, and are reached from Calico Basin via Gateway Canyon (N of Kraft Mt.)

Hasn't voted | So is Graycap technically in the Calico Hills? I went by CP's guide in mentioning Red Cap as the highpoint, but yesterday I got a message noting that Lists of John, which actually references CP's trip reports, has New Peak as the highpoint, though it just gives the elevation. I'm certainly not an expert after my recent visit, but I'd argue that New Peak is distinct enough in composition from the bulk of the Calico Hills to the west that it isn't part of them; plus, it's set apart from them pretty distinctly. But then Graycap, even farther away than New, certainly looks in composition more like one of the Calico Hills than it does not look like one. So is it the highpoint, or is it just a separated peak that looks a lot like its nearby neighbors? Any chance of some consensus here? Or is this just a matter no one has really considered to be that terribly important? I certainly don't have a problem editing the page if this issue is a little too gray (ha-ha, groan).

Voted 10/10 | I don't think there is any need to edit anything-- none of this stuff is sacrosanct, and all the names are unofficial. I really meant to point out that it is all fairly ambiguous, so there is no need to split hairs. The "Calico Hills" labels on the 100k and 24k maps just cover the area around Redcap, Calico Tank Peaks, and maybe New and Kraft. But I think it's all pretty vague. The USGS makes plenty of mistakes. I'd guess the name "Calico" was chosen because so many different colors (including gray!) are visible from the Basin. The name "New Peak" was actually sort of a joke by Eva P. I had put a register on top years back, but put no name down. Eva later wrote in "New". Kraft was probably named so because the Kraft family owns a lot of property in that area, and hikers going by would see the Kraft property signs.

Voted 10/10 | Elevation -- Years ago a guidebook mistakenly listed the height of graycap (5443') for redcap. Then a revision of the guidebook listed the elevation of a nearby 5142' limestone crag (still incorrect). On the real redcap, the topo map gives 4920' as the last closed contour below the top; but the last summit block (unresolved on the map, 40' contour interval, done by photogramm. with +/- 20' error) is at least 20' higher than the rather broad closed contour. Some people consider graycap to be part of Calico Hills, as it is mainly the same sandstone up to about 5300' or so. I never thought of the White Gully rte having class 4, but I guess if you are unfamiliar with the handholds, it can seem that way. We've been up there so many times that all the hidden nooks are known. About those hidden nooks -- in the last year, one of the handholds at the top of the notch (on the west side of the summit block, climber's right) has become loose. I guess it's a matter of time before someone pulls it off and takes a tumble. There has been a huge amount more traffic up there in the last year... maybe the route is about to become more class 4-like.

Hasn't voted | Oops-- I didn't mean to imply that the gully was Class 4; I went back and (hopefully) clarified that. I thought the exit from the top to the summit area, that spot aided by the "step," was borderline Class 4, and I thought the crack by the tinaja was an easy Class 4. But the gully-- definitely not Class 4. I hope that's clearer now. Well, next time I want to try CP's route, anyway; it sounds like a fun one. I really enjoyed Red Cap and the Calico Hills in general. I may keep the 4925 just to be consistent with CP's guide, but if I ever change it, I'll likely do what I have done in other situations like that-- go halfway between contour lines as an estimate. Thanks for the feedback.

Voted 10/10 | Given the error in elevation determination by photogrammetry -- and the fact that a datum change recently promoted most S NV peaks by ~3-6 feet -- I wouldn't worry.

Hasn't voted | Anya, thank you; it means a lot to me coming from someone so well-versed in the area as you are. I loved the Calico Hills especially; if we do move out to Vegas next year, I will be all over that place. I'll be adding your pictures to the main page tomorrow; right now, I'm just too tired... Cheers

Voted 10/10 | Sounds great. I got out today and there is still quite a lot of snow at 6,400 feet but it is melting quickly.
