As you mentioned, the west (Chilean) peak is marginally higher.
To end the controversy, in 2003 an Argentinian team climbed both towers simultaneously and made a topographic leveling between the two summits. It resulted that "the western tower is 54cm (+/-5cm) higher than the eastern one."
But the survey emphasises that "as this difference is lower than one meter (the minimum that justifies considering a summit higher than another one) it can be stated that both towers of Ojos del Salado have the same altitude. So, the real summit is both of them"... See report here (page 303)
I read the report and in a way it's nice to know that: "So, the real summit is both of them", but it's still very annoying to know that I haven't been on the highest point of the world's highest volcano.
I'll re-climb it next time I'm in the area.
I believe this region was part of a BBC Series where volcanic gasses were collected from the peak and used to prove the effects of Plate Techtonics and the Longterm Carbon Cycle.
The good news is that a fee is no longer required to climb the mountain from the Chilean side. You are supposed to pick up a free border permit in Copiapo though. The bad news is that the huts on the mountain are really filthy, which is unfortunate in what is now an overall clean country.
Does anyone know if a guide is required for this trip, i was under the impression apart from the permit anyone can attempt the Chilean summit but i found one page saying a guide is required. Can anyone clarify this situation
My name is Matthias and I am an 41 year old guy from Berlin/Germany.
From November 2018 untill March 2019 I have 5 months off from my job as an Social-Worker.
I booked a flight to Punta Arenas in Chile and a back-flight at the end of March from La Paz in Bolivia.
Nothing else is planned savely :-)
I love to trekking/hiking, sleeping in my tent, hitch-hiking and travel very indepently.
Will just have a small budget therefore I am interested in treks and areas where I do not have to pay high fees and having costs for tent-place or accommodation.
I am very experienced in hiking/trekking alone and I am very excited to explore Chile, Argentina and Bolivia !
Unfortunately I don´t speak Spanish just German and English.
But I already learned some poccito Spanglish :-)
Besides going into the nature I would love to get an impression of any social or egolocical organisation or movement if possible...
At the moment I am in Valparaíso.
Thinking about to go to the Ojos del Salado !
Do you have any information about how to do that ?
Or like to do it together ?
I read that there is some technical climb at the top.
Can you tell me something about that ?
